What is Buteyko?

“The perfect man is breathing as if he is not breathing”

The Buteyko Method of breathing is most commonly used as a treatment for those with asthma and other breathing disorders.

It was developed in Russia in the 1950's by a doctor called Konstantin Buteyko, from whom the technique gets its name. In 1981 the Russian authorities officially recognised the method as beneficial and approved it for use as a treatment for asthma throughout the former Soviet Union.

Word of the technique eventually spread to western countries such as Australia and New Zealand where practitioners have already built up 10-15 years experience of using the method.

The Buteyko method is not just a highly effective treatment for asthma, it can be used for any breathing related illness. Indeed Professor Buteyko identified over 150 illnesses that can be resolved by correcting the breathing.

It can be used by all people over the age of 4 yrs.
Many thousands of asthmatics and those with breathing difficulties have experienced remarkable improvement in their condition with this amazing method, which has allowed them to reduce their dependency on medication and enjoy a quality of life they previously thought impossible.

The Buteyko technique is currently used for asthma, emphysema, allergies, hyperventilation, panic attacks, bronchiectasis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic obstructive airways disease (COAD), sinusitis, rhinitis, snoring, sleep apnoea, and hay fever
